Creating courses

Creating an FE initial teacher training (ITT) course

As of academic year 2024/25, the Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is no longer in use for new students.

The DET qualification is only eligible for returning students who started their course before academic year 2024/25. Therefore, you must phase this out on CMS and do not use it for new students.

Only DIT-compliant qualifications are eligible for funding for new students.

From academic year 2024/25, the FE ITT courses that are designated if validated by a higher education provider with degree awarding powers are:

  • Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) level 5
  • Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PgCE) level 6
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) level 7
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) level 7

There are 3 qualification options available for new FE ITT courses from academic year 2024/25 on CMS:

  • Certificate in Education
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education
  • Professional Graduate Certificate in Education

From academic year 2024/25, the Secretary of State has published a list of ‘recognised further education initial teacher training courses’ to indicate courses that are eligible for HE student support. You can find this on the GOV.UK website.

You should not use any other qualifications for FE ITT courses except for phasing out any existing DET courses for returning students.

We’ll not add PGDE to CMS as a qualification option for academic year 2024/25. You should map these courses to the existing PGCE level 7 ITT qualification option, while including PGDE in the course title.

If you're recruiting students who intend to teach in the FE sector, you should include 'lifelong learning', in brackets, in the course name.

How to phase out DET qualifications on CMS

Full-time courses

Do not save full-time courses with the DET qualification for academic year 2024/25. If you do this in error, please set them to no students.

The only exception to this is if you are expecting any repeating students. In this scenario, you should save the DET course and set to returners to allow for repeating students only.

Part-time courses

Please begin to phase out part-time courses with the DET qualification to allow returning students who started their course before  academic year 2024/25 the chance to finish their course.

To do this, when saving these courses for returning students only for academic year 2024/25, set the courses to returners.

You can continue to save DET courses for future academic years until all part time students who started their DET course before academic year 2024/25 have finished their course.
