Postgraduate master's and doctoral applications are open for 2022/23

Postgraduate master's and doctoral students from all domiciles can now apply for student finance.

Please encourage your students to apply online as soon as possible. This will help to make sure they get their student finance in time for starting their course.

However, if you have any courses that are not yet submitted to our Courses Management Service (CMS), you should not publicise the launch of the student finance system. Until you submit your courses, any students who apply for finance to attend them will have their applications pended. This may cause delays to their finance.

Student Finance England

Postgraduate students only need to apply for finance once even if their course is longer than a year. The loan is divided equally across each year of the course.

Students can apply online for funding to help with course fees and living costs. There is more information for SFE postgraduate master's and doctoral students on GOV.UK. We've also created the following short films for them:

Student Finance Wales

Postgraduate students only need to apply for finance once even if their course is longer than a year. The loan is divided equally across each year of the course.

Postgraduate master’s funding is a mixture of loans and grants. All eligible students are entitled to a grant of at least £1000 which they do not have to pay back. The total amount of grant and loan students get is determined by their household income. There may be extra help available for students who have a disability.

Postgraduate master's students can find more information and apply on the Student Finance Wales website. We've also created a short film with more information about Postgraduate Master's funding for SFW students.

Postgraduate doctoral students can get funding to help with course fees and living costs. Postgraduate Doctoral Loans are not based on household income. There may be extra help available for students who have a disability.

Postgraduate doctoral students can find more information and apply on the Student Finance Wales website. We've also created a short film with more information about Postgraduate Doctoral Finance for SFW students.

Student Finance Northern Ireland

Postgraduate master's students can find more information and apply on the Student Finance Northern Ireland website.

If their course is longer than a year, they must reapply for each year of study. There may be extra help available if they have a disability.

Events affected postgraduate students

Postgraduate students applying for funding for academic year 2022/23 who do not satisfy ordinary residence requirements will be determined as ineligible. A letter advising of their ineligibility will be automatically sent to the student.

Students who become eligible as an 'event' after the start of the first academic year of the course, must let us know. This will allow us to reassess their eligibility. Students may become eligible as an event if they are granted one of the following statuses:

  • refugees and their family members
  • family members of a person with humanitarian protection
  • family members of a person with Stateless leave
  • Ukraine Schemes

The published documents have a full list of events that apply to Postgraduate Loans for Master’s Degrees and Postgraduate Loans for Doctoral Degrees.
