Postgraduate master's and doctoral applications are open for 2022/23

Postgraduate master's and doctoral students from all domiciles can now apply for student finance.

Please encourage your students to apply online as soon as possible. This will help to make sure they get their student finance in time for starting their course.

However, if you have any courses that are not yet submitted to our Courses Management Service (CMS), you should not publicise the launch of the student finance system. Until you submit your courses, any students who apply for finance to attend them will have their applications pended. This may cause delays to their finance.

Postgraduate students only need to apply for finance once even if their course is longer than a year. The loan is divided equally across each year of the course.

Students can apply online for funding to help with course fees and living costs. There is more information for SFE postgraduate master's and doctoral students on GOV.UK. We've also created the following short films for them:

Postgraduate master’s funding is a mixture of loans and grants. All eligible students are entitled to a grant of at least £1000 which they do not have to pay back. The total amount of grant and loan students get is determined by their household income. There may be extra help available for students who have a disability.

If you have students who become eligible as an 'event' after the start of the first academic year of the course, please tell them to let us know. This allows us to reassess their eligibility. Students should use the following contact details:

The published documents have a full list of events that apply to Postgraduate Loans for Master’s Degrees and Postgraduate Loans for Doctoral Degrees.
