Higher education short courses

Course eligibility


Short courses can be based on one or more modules of your existing designated higher education courses.

The main criteria for eligible short courses are:

  • they must be delivered by a provider based in England
  • they must carry 30 or 40 credits
  • they can be up to 12 months long, with no minimum duration
  • they can be ‘in attendance’ courses, distance learning courses or have a mixture of attendance methods
  • the maximum tuition fee loan available for a 30 credit short course is £2,310
  • the maximum tuition fee loan available for a 40 credit short course is £3,080
  • the latest date a short course can start is 31 July 2025
  • short courses must end within the trial period (on or before 31 August 2025)
  • short courses must consist of structured learning undertaken in the UK and cannot include any period of work placement or study abroad
  • ‘learning in the workplace’ where a student is undertaking structured learning in the workplace may form part or all of a short course
